Utah Wins Own Invitational

Tuesday, January 25, 2022 • by Curtis Snyder, RMISA

PARK CITY, Utah—The Utah Utes made it 2-for-2 with regular season RMSIA Invitationals, winning their own Utah Invitational handily with the slalom races closing out a whirlwind opening session for the alpine skiers.

In a rare occurrence, Utah didn't podium on the day, but did pick up two fifth place finishes with Wilhelm Normannseth and Katie Vesterstein. In the end, the Utes did what they needed to do and finished the meet with 648 points, 76 ahead of second place Colorado (562).

The Buffs Filip Forejtek won the slalom race, his second win of the season, first in slalom, while Westminster's Francesco Gori was second and Montana State's Henry Heaydon third to round out the podium. CU won the race with 88 points on the strength of Jacob Dilling also finishing fourth to go with Forejtek's win.

Westminster skied away with the women's race, scoring 99 points, 31 ahead of second place Denver (68). Behind Fredricsson's win, Denise Dingsleder hit the podium in third place and Julia Toiviainen was seventh. Denver's Katie Hensein took second for another podium appearance of her own.

The alpine teams now have over three weeks off before returning for the Denver Invitational, which is scheduled just ahead of the RMISA Championships to close out the season. The Nordic teams return to action next week in Fairbanks with four races over six days to close out the RMISA Invitational and participate in the UAF Invitational.
