Utah Wins Denver Invitational

Monday, February 21, 2022 • by Curtis Snyder, RMISA

KEYSTONE, Colo.—In a back-and-forth affair, the Westminster Griffins won the women's slalom race to overtake Utah and take a six point lead, but the Utes responded by winning the men's slalom race to edge out the Griffins in the final team standings here Monday as the Denver Invitational came to a close.

The Griffins put two on the podium of the women's race, with Denise Dingsleder getting the win and Eveline Fredricsson taking third. In between them was Montana State's Kristiane Bekkestad. Dingsleder won both runs to win by nearly eight tenths of a second.

But Utah then took control of the men's race with Wilhelm Normannseth picking up medalist honors. He was the only Ute on the podium, but they also had Jeremy Mathers in fourth place. Westminster's Francesco Gori did take second, but the next highest Griffin was in 18th place. Denver's Simon Fournier rounded out the podium in third place.

Teams now turn their attention to the postseason. Action will get underway at the RMISA Championships Wednesday with GS races on Mt. Werner. Alpine teams will then race three days at Howelsen Hill with slalom races on Thursday and Friday and a parallel slalom exhibition on Saturday.

Nordic teams will compete Friday and Saturday, also at Howelsen Hill. The host Colorado Buffaloes will live stream all RMISA Championship races and part of the parallel slalom race on Saturday, the first time a multi-camera stream will show any race other than an NCAA Championship.
